Weekly Devlog #6 - Self-discipline

There’s only small snippets of development news this week. So instead of talking about the game, I’ll share a short anecdote about self-discipline, as it plays an integral role in longer hobby projects.

When it comes to my experience in life and developing games, I often joke about how everything is horrible and disorganized. But it’s not all that bad.

A month before starting Point & Sin, I had developed a habit of manually documenting how well I’m fulfilling various self-imposed challenges. Later, I also applied this habit to the game and rated each day from 0 to 100 depending on how much work was done in the project. Generally, 0’s dominate.

However, as I was looking through my old notes, I noticed that there’s miniscule progress. Weeks when nothing is done are becoming less frequent.

It’s a very slow grind towards improvement. Various health issues, personal events and experiences tend to set you back quite a bit. In a way, it is identical to improving your sleeping habits.

This allegory also nicely explains the difficulty of sticking to a regimen when developing in your free time instead of doing it at a day job. Waking up early does come a tiny bit easier when you have to be at school or office.

And, in spite of all this deep insight, I’m writing this on a Tuesday when the original intention was to do it last Sunday.

Let’s see what this week shall bring.

Keep on sinning,

“Main project” and “P&S” both refer to Point & Sin. I attempted to rate each day from 0 to 100 in terms of how much work was done for the project.
