Devlog #14 - The Past 3 Months

First time I’ve gotten a decent booth in a convention (@Hypertown Rix, Rīga, Latvia)

The past 3 months for me have been littered with a bunch of events related to gamedev.

It was my first time visiting large international conventions like GDC and Nordic Games Conference. There were also some excellent local events like gamedev.lv conference and Hypertown Rix expo. Somewhere between all of that I also got to participate in Ludum Dare 44 gamejam and a Path of Exile fan art contest (with one project).

Stupid Beast! Is a side project I did for Ludum Dare 44 and a fan-art contest. It was my first time developing something with isometric tiles. I hope to gradually transition to isometric view to Point & Sin as well - it just feels right for an action rpg game.

These indeed were some illuminating experiences. However, despite being quite inspired by all that happened, it also derailed me from my routine and the development of Point & Sin stagnated, since it is a hobby project that I do in my free time. I also got sick twice and in the past weeks I’ve been even more distracted and impulsive than usual.

Gamedev.lv conference afterparty. It took place on a ship reserved specifically for the event. It was one of the first warm days of the year, but as the night approached, so did a cold breeze and most people were cuddled up in blankets by the time the ship returned back

As I’m preparing this devlog, I also noticed that I haven’t posted two of the last devlogs here, on itch.io and rather only put them up on Twitter or Youtube. Ideally, I should have posted it on all platforms where I’m trying to build some kind of presence (i.e. Facebook, itch.io, Twitter, pornhub, Youtube). I just kept postponing it for tomorrow for almost two months. Sorry about that if you’ve been only following me on itch.io :D

At times like this (and other times too), it really helps to have outside support in the form of family, fans and team members (and friends and other fictional personas). Sometimes all it takes is a message from the artist on a Saturday evening to stop you from starting up Steam and going - “OK, I guess I could do some gamedev now.”

This bloody game (Path of Exile) has been both one of my main inspirations and distractions

Anyways, right now I’m slowly trying to get back on track and develop a habit of regularly working on the game. Even one or two hours a day would be much better than how it is now. I’m still figuring out whether I should attempt to post weekly updates again or it would be an overkill.

At the moment I’m trying to get some basic stuff done correctly - getting all the game assets in the same resolution, implementing pixel perfect movement, so new features and updates are unlikely to come soon. I had previously toyed with the idea of making new prototypes from scratch for this + game story, but this approach has been discarded for now.

So far I’ve managed to make the player movement pixel perfect, but he doesn’t take the shortest path to the target (marked with blue). This is due to some rounding errors I guess.
